Presentation:
The "International Conference on Biofuels: Biofuels as a driving force of
sustainable development" will be held in S=E3o Paulo, Brazil, from the 17th=
to
the 21st of November, 2008.
The Conference intends to encourage international discussion about the
challenges and opportunities posed by biofuels and to provide important
occasion for addressing issues related to biofuels, such as energy security,
sustainability of the production and use, agricultural and industrial
processing, as well as issues related to technical specifications and
standards, international trade, climate change, and biofuels' future.
Representatives of governments from all United Nations member states,
several international organizations, members of parliaments, the scientific
and academic communities, the private sector, civil society stakeholders,
and NGOs, have been invited to take part at the Conference. .
The event will be structured in two parts: the "Plenary Sessions," which
will be open to the public, scheduled for November 17-19; and "High-Level
Intergovernmental Meeting," scheduled for November 20-21 (Organization and
Operation).
Five major issues related to biofuels will be discussed:
a) Biofuels and Energetic Security: energetic matrix's transition; sources'
diversification; universal access;
b) Biofuels and Climate Change: mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions; land
use change; life cycle's comparative analysis.
c) Biofuels and Sustainability: food security; income generation; ecosystems
challenges;
d) Biofuels and Innovation: research and development; first- and
second-generation biofuels; opportunities for Science and Technology; and
e) Biofuels and the International Market: trade norms; technical issues;
socio-environmental standards.
The last two days, 20th and 21st, will be devoted to the discussions of the
High-Level Intergovernmental Meeting, in round table format, with the
participation of government representatives of ministerial rank and
international organizations.
