Countway Library Fellowships in the History of Medicine 2009-2010 The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine is pleased to offer two annual fellowships to support research in the history of medicine. Established in 1960 as a result of an alliance between the Boston Medical Library and the Harvard Medical Library, the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine is the largest academic medical library in the United States. The Countway Library maintains a collection of approximately 700,000 volumes. Its Center for the History of Medicine holds 250,000 books and journals published before 1920, including 802 incunabula. The department?s printed holdings include one of the most complete medical periodical collections, an extensive collection of European medical texts issued between the 15th and 20th centuries, and excellent holdings of pre-1800 English and pre-1900 American imprints. The book collection is strong in virtually every medical discipline and is particularly rich in popular medicine, medical education, public health, Judaica, and travel accounts written by physicians. The Countway's collection of archives and manuscripts, approximately 20 million items, is the largest of its kind in the United States. The manuscript collection includes the personal and professional papers of many prominent American physicians, especially those who practiced and conducted research in the New England region, or who were associated with Harvard Medical School. The Countway Library also serves as the institutional archives for the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and the Harvard School of Public Health. The printed, manuscript, and archives holdings are complemented by an extensive print and photograph collection and the collections of the Warren Anatomical Museum. Established in 1847, the museum houses an exceptional collection of medical artifacts, pathological specimens, anatomical models, and instruments. The Francis A. Countway Library Fellowships in the History of Medicine provide stipends of up to $5,000 to support travel, lodging, and incidental expenses for a flexible period between June 1, 2009 and May 31, 2010. The fellowship proposal should demonstrate that the Countway Library has resources central to the research topic. Preference will be given to applicants who live beyond commuting distance of the Countway. The application, outlining the proposed project (proposal should not exceed five pages), length of residence, materials to be consulted, and a budget with specific information on travel, lodging, and research expenses, should be submitted, along with a curriculum vitae and two letters of recommendation, by January 31, 2009. Applications should be sent to: Countway Fellowships, Center for the History of Medicine, Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, 10 Shattuck Street, Boston, MA 02115. The appointment will be announced by March 15, 2009. The Boston Medical Library?s Abel Lawrence Peirson Fund provides support for the fellowship program. The Boston Medical Library is a physicians' non-profit organization, incorporated in 1877. Its mission is "to be a Library for the dissemination of medical knowledge, the promotion of medical education and scholarship, and the preservation and celebration of medical history, and thereby to advance the quality of health and healthcare of the people." Today there are over 300 fellows of the Boston Medical Library. In 1960, the Boston Medical Library entered into an agreement with the Harvard Medical School Library to combine staff, services, and collections into one modern biomedical facility. The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine opened in 1965 and ranks as one of the largest biomedical libraries in the world. Message-ID: Dear PCST friends! = I just want to draw your attention towards an interesting call in the EU FP= 7: Science in Society, with the objective of Structuring Public Engagement= in Research (PER). The call targets academia, research bodies, policy make= rs, aiming at stimulating good models and exchange of best practice within = PER . Truly inspiring! = The Swedish Research Council has as a National Contact Point a special inte= rest and a responsibility for the Science in Society program. We have also = a long tradition within science communication and involving citizens in the= research process and we are fully aware that there are similar ambitions a= nd traditions in many other countries, as the 10th PCST Conference in Malm= =F6/Lund/Copenhagen clearly illustrated this summer! = = We would be interested in knowing if there are organisations preparing an a= pplication and looking for partners? At the moment, the Swedish Council doe= s not have the ambition to play a leading role as a project coordinator in = a consortium, = but we could certainly be a partner in a collaboration! As you can see from= the call fiche, the calls in the framework program are mainly directed tow= ards European stakeholders, but in many cases with an opening for a wider i= nternational collaboration. = = Do read, think, process it in your organisation, if you find that this is a= good opportunity and have ideas about how a project and a consortium could= be put together, = please get back, and we=B4ll arrange a workshop or get together. There are already many initiatives to improve civil society's acc= ess to and uptake of research findings. When submitting a request for registration in the 18th Summer School Program, *the candidate must have concluded at least 4 (four) semesters of the course (or the equivalent).* Registrations from students matriculated in the last semester of the course, graduate students and post-graduates will not be accepted. *Requisites for candidates *The candidates must have excellent academic achievement, substantiated by school records on the disciplines already completed, and must demonstrate interest in scientific research or technological development. The candidates are selected by a committee of LNLS researchers who mainly consider the academic performance of the candidate and the references given by professors and supervisors in letters of recommendation. There are no specific quotas for countries, institutions or areas of the candidate's interest. *What the LNLS offers *The selected students will receive roundtrip transportation from their place of origin to Campinas, lodging, meals, health insurance and transportation from their lodging to the LNLS and back. *HOW TO REGISTER?* *Step 1*: make a cadastre at *LNLS Portal * Note: The Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory has just one platform which is used to store researchers records and, therefore some questions are not appropriate for the academic level of a undergraduation student. Questions such as those referring to indexed publications are not supposed to be answered by the student. Required fields are marked with asterisk. *Step 2*: after having received the password, make the login at *LNLS Portal * a= nd select the option "Courses and Events". Then select "Courses and Events Registration" and then "SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM". 1- Attach your CURRICULUM VITAE and Academic Records (preferably in PDF format) 2 - In the field "Additional Information" write your area of interest (choose just one): Application of Synchrotron Light Molecular and Structural Biology Materials Science (with emphasis on nanoscience and nanotechnology) Physics and Engineering of Accelerator Scientific Instrumentation 3 - In the field "Justification" write why you consider yourself a good candidate to participate in the 18=BA Summer School Program. 4 - Ask two of your teachears to provide letter of recommendation for you. The letters should be sent to LNLS by November 03, 2008 to bv@lnls.br, including your full name in the field subject. Concerning the letter, the teachers should certify that know you and know about your competence as a student. They should also certify that you partipate ou have participated in academic activities eventually (such as Undergratuation Scientific Program, for example). The letters of recommendation should be individualized and are not supposed to be signed. They just need to be sent directly by the teacher tobv@lnls.br. Incomplete registrations or those sent after the deadline will not be accepted. ***In case you have any doubt or problem with the Services Portal, please send an e-mail to secre@lnls.br . We have decided to use popular culture, and, in the specific, a popular tale from Messina regarding the fisherman Colapesce, readapting this story with the introduction of a modern character, a seismologist from Ingv. The script will be performed by the scholars of the elementary school (2 classroom with 7 and 9 years scholars) together with a seismologist of our institute (the only adult character). At present the teachers have already the script and they are working with the scholars on it. Of course in the script there is a part where some science about earthquakes and in the specific the seismicity of our country are introduced, together with risk protection. It will be great if any of you has done analog experiences and maybe written papers on it, can transmit articles and/or a bibliography . We are interested also in papers concerning the more general topic of how to use theatre for science education. Any other idea or suggestion is of course well accepted. I thank you in advance for your kind attention and collaboration.
