Dear PCST friends!

 =

I just want to draw your attention towards an interesting call in the EU FP=
7: Science in Society, with the objective of Structuring Public Engagement=
in Research (PER). The call targets academia, research bodies, policy make=
rs, aiming at stimulating good models and exchange of best practice within =
PER . Truly inspiring!

 =

The Swedish Research Council has as a National Contact Point a special inte=
rest and a responsibility for the Science in Society program. We have also =
a long tradition within science communication and involving citizens in the=
research process and we are fully aware that there are similar ambitions a=
nd traditions in many other countries, as the 10th PCST Conference in Malm=
=F6/Lund/Copenhagen clearly illustrated this summer! =

 =

We would be interested in knowing if there are organisations preparing an a=
pplication and looking for partners? At the moment, the Swedish Council doe=
s not have the ambition to play a leading role as a project coordinator in =
a consortium, =

but we could certainly be a partner in a collaboration! As you can see from=
the call fiche, the calls in the framework program are mainly directed tow=
ards European stakeholders, but in many cases with an opening for a wider i=
nternational collaboration. =

 =

Do read, think, process it in your organisation, if you find that this is a=
good opportunity and have ideas about how a project and a consortium could=
 be put together, =

please get back, and we=B4ll arrange a workshop or get together. Deadline i=
s in the middle of January 2009, meaning that we don't have much time to lo=
ose if we want to act. We have already been in contact with a sister organi=
sation, resulting in a very positive answer. An ideal collaborative project=
would be with innovative partners, representing a variety of European coun=
tries and traditions in this field and some other collaborative partners fr=
om other parts of the world. =

Area 5.1.2.1 Broader engagement on science-related questions

 =

SiS-2009-1.2.1.1 Structuring Public Engagement in Research (PER)

 =

Description of topic: This initiative aims at fostering a deeper and more s=
ystematic engagement of research bodies with civil society groups and the w=
ider public in the European

Research Area1 as well as transnational exchanges of experience and mutual =
learning. There are already many initiatives to improve civil society's acc=
ess to and uptake of research

findings. Advancing public engagement does not mean an endless stream of co=
mmunication devices; it implies, rather, openly considering and implementin=
g forms of dialogue between

research bodies and civil society which will make a difference to research =
strategies, and which will become part of current research practices.

The proposals will therefore consist of:

The development of multi-annual PER action plans which promote and organise=
 the

participation of civil society in research strategies at the level of organ=
isations, involved in

the funding, designing and/or implementation of research, and

The transnational exchange of best practice and mutual learning between PER=
 action

plans.

The transnational dimension will be an essential part of the project to whi=
ch the development

of the PER actions plans will be related. =

Etc.......
