"Popular science" or "Citizen science" are two of the traditional ways of defining science grassroots produced outside the walls of laboratories. But the internet has changed the way of collecting and organising the knowledge produced by people - peers - who do not belong to the established scientific community. In this issue we want to discuss: - How web tools are changing and widening this way of participating in the production of scientific knowledge. Do this increase in participation consist in a real shift towards democratizing science or on the contrary is merely a rhetoric which do not affect the asymmetrical relationships between citizens and institutions? - The ways in which both academic and private scientific institutions are appropriating this knowledge and its value. Do we need a new model to understand these ways of production and appropriation? Are they part of a deeper change in productive paradigms? We would like to collect both theoretical contributions and research articles which address for example case studies in social media and science, peer production, the role of private firms in exploiting web arenas to collect scientific/medical data from their costumers, online social movements challenging communication incumbents, web tools for development. Interested authors should submit an extended abstract of no more than 500 words (in English) to the issue editor by June 1st, 2009. We will select three to five papers for inclusion in this special issue. Abstracts should be sent to the JCOM's editorial office (jcom-eo@jcom.sissa.it) by email. Please help us and spread this call in your mailing lists, blogs, websites. Message-ID: <020601c9d51d$b11e2340$135a69c0$@com.au> Wednesday, 19 August at the Brisbane Convention Centre, Australia - as part of the 10th International Ecology Congress and hosted and organised by Australian Science Communicators (ASC) To register go to: http://www.intecol10.org/rego.asp A day registration for the Congress will cost A$375 if you register before Friday May 22 (this has been extended from May 16). The central question this symposium will explore is: given that climate change is occurring, how can science communicators work with governments, industry, business and communities to help generate solutions to the problems it raises? Solutions will focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as adapting to climate change. This is one of three symposia being organised by the Australian Science Communicators on communicating the science of climate change. The symposium includes panel discussions and key note speakers in the morning and facilitated small group discussions in the afternoon, which seek to answer questions like: . How do politics and economics affect communicating about climate change science? . Is there a balance between ecological needs and economic needs when dealing with a changing climate? . How do you communicate the link between ecology and the economy? . Can science inform the economy and visa versa? . Can a carbon emissions trading scheme be based on good science? . How can good science be brought into policy discussions about climate change? . How can we communicate climate change science with politicians and industry and business leaders? And involve people in that discussion? Challenges for a target group-orientated science communication? Scicom09 is the second international and transdisciplinary conference on the topic of science communication in Austria, initiated and realised by science2public (www.science2public.at) in cooperation with the Institute of Science Communication and Higher Education Research (University of Klagenfurt, www.uni-klu.ac.at/wiho) and the Vienna University of Technology (www.tuwien.ac.at). We would very much appreciate your contribution to the conference. Please submit your paper until June 22nd 2009. Please visit the conference website www.scicom.co.at to receive more information: http://www.scicom.co.at(in German) Intentions SciCom09 is aiming for 4 main objectives: 1. Interprofessional and transdisciplinary reflection among the various players in science communication: scientists, media representatives, communicators, scholars and policy makers. 2. Analysis of communication processes and knowledge transfer among the mentioned players in science communication. 3. Illustration an examination of activities and formats in science communication with regard to their differing target groups. 4. Development of concrete recommendations for efficient, target group-orientated activities in science communication. Main issues SciCom09 addresses to the various players and differing target groups in science communication and seeks for successful activities and formats. Submission on current issues concerning science communication are appreciated as well. In particular SciCom09 deals with: 1. activities and concepts in science communication Which ways of knowledge transfer will be taken nationally and internationally in the future? Which activities and formats performed well (bad) in which contexts? Which setting can be established to value the success or failure of communication strategies? Which conceptions of responsibility and trust undergo the several practises of communication? 2. target groups in science communication focusing children and adolescents Which recipients receive which messages in which way? Who seeks for which topics? Which way of knowledge transfer is successful and reasonable? How can we deal with differing target groups: educational, experience-driven, participative, conversational, gender-specific? 3. players in science communication and their interests How are which players acting and in whose interest? Which rules, inherent to the system, are linked to these interests and enable or disable which communication process among which persons? Target groups The call for papers addresses to scientists as well as to media representatives, communicators, scholars, policy makers, students, and every other person who operates between science, media, education and cultural work. Contributions Please submit your contribution in form of speeches, discussion rounds, workshops, or in any other form of demonstration. Interactive and dialog orientated formats are highly appreciated. Furthermore, there is the possibility to present a whole panel.
