To find out more about the course, see: http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/course/sh804.htm The course is essential professional development for anyone with an interest in how the sciences are communicated, whether you work in academia, industry, as a professional science communicator, etc. The course will also be of interest to anyone with a general interest in how scientific information circulates in the public sphere. The course is open to students living and working within and outside the UK. In the course you will examine ?traditional? and ?emerging? media forms, e.g. communicating scientific information via oral presentations, posters and lecture demonstrations, or as part of science centre and museum exhibitions, through to peer reviewed papers, popular science books, broadcast news and documentaries, magazine radio programmes and Web 2.0 technologies. In studying the course you will consider a number of contemporary concepts and theories relevant to these media, including ideas about ?upstream public engagement with science and technology?, ?public service broadcasting?, the ?open access movement? and ?political economy of media?. The course uses a range of media to teach and learn these issues, making use of some of the traditional and emerging media forms that are examined in the materials. As a student of the course you therefore have the opportunity to choose where, when and via which media you study. Printed materials are offered as standard for the study commentaries and course readers, but these materials are also delivered online alongside a number of embedded media assets, including audio downloads. If you?re studying while on the move you no longer have to carry heavy books and study materials with you; a networked computing device is sufficient. But if the printed word is your chosen method of study then this option is also available. The course contributes to the following awards: ? MSc in Science and Society - http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/qualification/f48.htm ? Postgraduate Diploma in Science and Society - http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/qualification/e35.htm ? MSc in Science - http://www3.open.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/qualification/f12.htm The Open University is incorporated by Royal Charter (RC 000391), an exempt charity in England & Wales and a charity registered in Scotland (SC 038302).
