Explaining the science and importance of climate change is not easy. Targeted communication with maps and graphics makes it easier to grasp what it's all about. Many of us now have the power to work closely with data, but we also need to know how to use that data to reach policymakers and the public. Communicating effectively without getting lost in the complexity of the topic is also essential. In our role as environmental communications experts, we have joined forces to establish a training program to build capacity in using maps and graphics to explain climate change. We plan to hold the training in the days leading up to COP15 in Copenhagen in December, and we welcome anyone involved in communicating climate change issues. You can read more about the workshop at http://nordpil.com/climateworkshop. Would you or your institution be interested in attending? Your comments, suggestions and ideas are very welcome! I am writing to determine whether anyone is working on a project for the next call from FP7 Capacities Work Programme: Science in Society. I am interested in finding out whether anyone could find a best-practice project interesting or if anyone has ideas in terms of other ways of exchanging knowledge with regards to the communication form. Briefly introduced, The Science Theatre communicates knowledge to the general public through a media that combines traditional lectures with acting, dance, music as well as being interactive in part. The lecturers participate on stage alongside actors, musicians and dancers. Currently we are touring / promoting different performances. One revolves around Stem cells, Brain research, obesity and diabetes (Premi?re March 2010) and another deals with handling conflicts in a work environment (Premi?re September 2009). For the SIS call, we would like to participate with a performance focusing on the science of Biofuels and GMO. I would appreciate any feedback with respect to a best-practice project or any other ideas/comments. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me on the contact information given below. At the PCST conference in Sweden last year, I met someone working for the Swedish Parliament who does such a job. She works directly with the politicians, not for a government department. Are there any others? I'm specifically looking for communicators that are serving all the elected politicians and not just the ruling political party. (My apologies if my political terminology is not strictly accurate, hopefully the meaning is clear.) I would also be interested in organisations that do this for politicians/decision-makers, particularly nationally funded organisations (eg CSIRO in Australia does a breakfast for politicians, briefing them on topical areas of science). Many of those sending thesis abstracts have also sent words of support for this project. However, we have certainly not received abstracts for most of the relevant theses. As the deadline of 1st October approaches, we send this reminder of the call, along with a special appeal to those on the list who may have supervised such theses to encourage their (former) students to send in abstracts. Many thanks. Brian Trench and Maarten van der Sanden ++++++ PCST network is collecting information about PhD theses completed since 2000 on topics in science communication and closely related areas. This information, with a classification by topic area and country, will be published on the web site, pcstacademy.org, and a review will be presented at PCST11 conference in 2010. This exercise is intended to provide an overview of current and recent research in the growing field of science communication that will support those starting in the field. It is also intended to promote networking between researchers in science communication. Information is sought on doctoral theses that addressed mainly or exclusively topics such as science in media, public communication by scientists and scientific institutions, history of popularisation, science museums and science centres, science festivals and events, public consultation in science-related policy, risk communication on science-related issues, and so on. For each thesis we seek the following details: Title; author; affiliation (university or similar); date of completion; supervisor(s); examiner(s); abstract (approx 250 words); where accessible (online or print). Brian Trench of the PCST network scientific committee and Maarten van der Sanden of University of Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) are leading this project. Summaries of theses, as outlined, should be sent by 1 October to M.C.A.vanderSanden@tudelft.nl An example of a completed summary can be had from Maarten at this email address and further information on this project can be had from Maarten or from brian.trench@dcu.ie This message is sent to mailing lists concerned with science communication. If you receive this message and know of a researcher or thesis supervisor to whom it might be relevant, please pass it on. Feel free also to post it to other relevant mailing lists. Thank you.
